When HK Harbors London

This work is produced for “Awakening Battersea”, a sound project commissioned by “China Power Station part I”, an exhibition of Chinese contemporary art and architecture organized by Serpentine Gallery. The exhibition opened in Oct. 2006 at the Battersea Power Station in London.
Most of the sound materials in this work were recorded during my HK trip in June 2006. Especially, they are sounds from HK’s Victoria Harbour area.
Economically, a harbour, by exporting and importing, constitutes one of the most important bases of a strong economy. While literally, aside from ‘port’, harbour also means ‘place of refuge, comfort and security’. HK’s economy took off via international trading (ie. via the harbour), and London(UK) played an essential role in HK’s economical development. In this sense, London used to harbour HK.
Meanwhile, it was through HK and its harbours that UK knocked out the door of Qing Dynasty and strengthened its global economical power in the 19th century. Today (in 2006), HK has been back to China for 9 years. China has emerged as a significant global economy power that in turn influences UK’s economy.
When I was walking around Victoria Harbour area, fascinated by the mixed port and urban sound, I can feel the haunt of the transforming history. Thus, by combining the field recording and synthesize sound, I try to describe a dreamy and blur sound picture, let the feelings walk through the history.
